Ros Jay How To Build A Great Team

The first skill you'll need as a successful manager is to be able to select the best people to work with you. Once you've done this then you need to turn them into a team. However, the most important - and often elusive - skill is to create team spirit. If you can create a team made up of people with a wide range of abilities, then there's no need for every single member to have every useful quality or skill. It's far easier to overcome problems when everyone is working together using the sum of their individual abilities.By building a team with a great team spirit you will: improve morale and motivation, reduce staff turnover, increase productivity and provide job satisfaction to your team members. Of course as part of the team you will benefit as a manager too. A well functioning, productive and inspired team reflects well on you as a team leader. How to Build a Great Team is the guide to honing your people skills to create and get the best from your team. And once you've picked the right group of people with the right combination of skills and personalities, it shows you how to maintain your team spirit and go on building as your team develops.

In 1971, Warner expanded into the cable television business by purchasing various small cable companies. Ross competed directly with the Big Three television networks that dominated television broadcasting, believing in the potential of narrowcasting whereby separate cable channels were developed to target specific audiences with narrower interests, mirroring the radio station model.[1] This pioneering approach led to the creation of the successful cable TV channels MTV and Nickelodeon which were both later sold at a great profit.[1]

In 1976, Warner Communications purchased Atari, Inc. and had great success with its Atari 2600 consoles. But by 1983, Atari collapsed in the wake of the video games crash that same year, leaving Warner Communications vulnerable to a hostile takeover. Rupert Murdoch tried to buy Warner, but Ross was able to impede him by selling 20 percent of Warner to Chris-Craft Industries (then controlled by Herbert J. Siegel).[1]

The franchise called the New York Cosmos was created in early 1971 with Englishman Clive Toye as its first general manager and 37-year-old Gordon Bradley as the player/coach. Playing out their debut season in almost empty stadiums with virtually no media coverage, the Cosmos were a rag-tag semi-professional operation, but most importantly Ross was hooked and very much interested to see the team do well. Scared of losing money, the ten original investors sold their stake in the franchise to newly created Warner Communications (the company where Ross was CEO and chairman) for $1. Essentially, with the sale, Ross added the modest franchise to the vast media empire he was in charge of running.

Since the Cosmos failed to make the playoffs in Pelé's debut season, for the next season, Ross decided to complement his superstar with more prominent names from overseas, the biggest of which was 29-year-old temperamental Italian striker Giorgio Chinaglia from S.S. Lazio. The striker became an undeniable goal-scoring hit on the pitch with 19 goals in 19 league appearances that season, but his style of play as well as his egotistical and arrogant manner also got him many detractors both within and outside of the club. However, he endeared himself to Ross as the two soon became very close friends. Due to increased interest, the team moved to Yankee Stadium. Though the Brazilian midfield organizer and the Italian striker quickly developed an uneasy relationship, thanks to their assists and goals, respectively, the club managed to make the playoffs, losing to underdogs Tampa Bay Rowdies led by Rodney Marsh in the conference semifinal series 3 games to 1. Pelé still got the league MVP honors and Chinaglia became the league's top goalscorer. Though furious over the early playoff exit, Ross immediately took the team on an exhibition summer tour of Europe with stops to play friendly games in England, France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Italy. Though hugely expensive, the tour generated plenty of publicity for Warner Communications.

In the deal, Cleveland's front office sold high on a homegrown player to acquire a bounty of talent that set the team up for success in the future -- a theme common amongst deals the Guardians make. Cleveland could once again be a power player at the Trade Deadline this year, as the Guardians have the prospect capital to compete in any trade and enough question marks on their roster to be a theoretical fit for almost every available player.

That said, two other pieces of the trade are waiting in the wings, as Arias (the team's No. 4 prospect) could become the Guardians' everyday shortstop as early as next year while Cantillo (No. 30 prospect) could end up in Cleveland at some point next year.

Puig made an immediate impact as Cleveland pushed for a playoff spot in 2019 (he batted .297 with a 109 OPS+ in 49 games) before the team let him go in the offseason. Allen could never put it all together in Cleveland (3-7, 5.45 ERA) and is currently in Triple-A with Baltimore.

Red Sox (Top 30 Prospects)LocksKutter Crawford, RHP (No. 25) -- Boston is thin on right-handed bullpen depth, creating opportunity for the hard-throwing Crawford, who came up as a starter and debuted last September. He's whiffed eight in three relief appearances this spring. Manager Alex Cora announced on Monday that he's made the team.

Yankees (Top 30 Prospects)LocksJP Sears, LHP (No. 24) -- The Citadel product allowed a run on two hits and a walk while fanning three over three innings in his first spring start on Monday, and he told Yankees beat reporter Bryan Hoch that he'd been informed he'd made the team.

Reid Detmers, LHP (No. 1) -- Detmers impressed the Angels this spring and was named their sixth starter following his April 1 outing against Cincinnati. The team's top prospect, who debuted last August and made five starts for the Halos, struck out 11 without issuing a walk over 5 2/3 frames in the Cactus League.

Long shotsMichael Stefanic, 2B (No. 27) -- Stefanic isn't on the 40-man roster and is considered a long shot to make the team out of Spring Training. The 26-year-old right-handed hitter, who batted .336 in the Minors last year, is batting .381 (8-for-21) this spring.

Astros (Top 30 Prospects)LocksJeremy Peña, SS (No. 1) -- Peña is set to inherit the Astros' starting shortstop role from Carlos Correa. Those are big shoes to fill, but the 24-year-old is the team's top prospect. Peña is batting .389 in Spring Training (7-for-18) and hit .297 with 10 home runs in just 37 games in the Minors last season.

LockBryson Stott, SS (No. 1) -- The former first-round pick had a huge year in 2021, climbing three levels and excelling in the AFL and was named to the Opening Day roster on Tuesday. He entered that day's Grapefruit League action tied with Bryce Harper for the team lead in hits with 12.

Cardinals (Top 30 Prospects)LocksAndre Pallante, RHP (No. 15): The 2019 fourth-rounder found the fast track to the bigs, having made 21 starts for Double-A Springfield and two appearances -- one start -- for Triple-A Memphis last year. Manager Oliver Marmol said Pallante made the team because of his ability to induce ground balls, and the Cardinals plan to use him out of the bullpen.

Cubs (Top 30 prospects)LocksEthan Roberts, RHP (No. 30) -- Added to the 40-man roster this winter, Roberts entered camp in the mix for a bullpen job. He logged four scoreless appearances this spring and made the team.

ContendersAlfonso Rivas, 1B/OF (No. 23) -- Rivas is getting an extended look and is tied for the team lead in hits this spring. There is a scenario where he could head north if the Cubs want an extra lefty bat on the bench. 2ff7e9595c
